I remember a friend of mine telling me years’ ago that the only committee that ever works has an odd number less than 3!
I appreciate that’s a very broad sweeping statement, but it is one of those sayings that comes back to me fairly regularly. There are certainly times when the person who has been given the job has to do the job – and, if that person can’t do it, then he/she has to be replaced with someone who can! Not doing anything, simply because the committee cannot agree, does no good for anyone.
I must be getting old, because there’s another great saying I recall an old boss of mine often quoting - apparently it came from Ken Morrison - “If someone has the job of buying beans, they have to buy the beans, it’s their job”.
I am sure you can see where I am going with this, and I have no experience in politics, nor any desire to have. I do believe however that we all need direction, a leader, a plan, and the problem with committees is that sometimes they want so many things that nothing ever happens. Someone has to put their hand up, be prepared to take a risk, sometimes the decision will be right, sometimes wrong, but if that decision is made for the right reasons and can be justified, whether it turns out to be good or bad decision, it needs making!
That’s life, be it in business, in politics, in general life, big decisions are difficult, but essential!
“Most people spend more time and energy going around problems than in trying to solve them” Henry Ford
